When they finally got some film stock, Soviet montage filmmakers, who had come to believe that “for film to reach its true potential, the cuts themselves should be visible, the audience should be aware of them, the illusion should be obviously constructed and not hidden,” got to work making movies that demonstrated their ideas. So while the nation built up the industrial capacity to produce film stock domestically, these filmmakers - much like the video essayists on the internet today - studied existing films, breaking them down, reassembling them, and figuring out how they worked. But after the Russian Revolution, which put an end to the importation of film stock, Russian filmmakers couldn’t shoot a frame. The government understood, in other words, the power of cinema as propaganda, and swiftly centralized the film industry. What’s more, that invention came out of the very revolution that put the Communists in power, after which the Soviet government “took a strong interest in film, because it recognized cinema for what it was - a powerful tool for social and political influence.” So says Craig Benzine, host of Crash Course Film History, in the series’ eighth self-contained episode, “Soviet Montage,” which tells the story of that cinema-changing editing technique. It would have scandalized many an American filmgoer of the mid-twentieth century to learn that the movies they watched - even the most wholesome Hollywood fare of the era - made extensive use of a Soviet invention. ![]() It could be devastating for that area, but nothing that would produce a massive eruption. There is a decreasing chance that the eruption could start offshore, where the sudden heating of water from magma interaction could produce some (relatively) small explosions. I've been following Iceland volcanic activity for years, and this activity won't end up with a massive explosion.įirst, it's the wrong kind of magma. And a major wake up call.įor those expectations a huge, climate changing eruption from Iceland, think again. I’ve never had back problems before so this is all new to me. That's the question I would ask of my surgeon. My concern with your first option would be that, even if you didn't feel pain, that you would still have numbness because the nerve is still being compressed. Not an easy choice, and I guess if the simpler surgery doesn't work, the artificial disc would be an alternative. ![]() And probably I could have had that done if I had more time to ask other surgeons, but due to my dropfoot, I didn't have time to waste. If I had the option of an artificial disc, I would have done that. It's going through the muscles that causes a lot of discomfort and stiffness. And I spent only 1 night in the hospital. My fusion was minimally invasive, 4 small incisions that healed quickly. They often didn't last more than 10 years and would have to be taken out and a fusion procedure would be done. NOAA’s new prediction, though larger than the panel prediction and larger than Cycle 24, would still make the strength of Solar Cycle 25 below average. The newer artificial disc's are the next generation ones and are much longer lasting than the first generation ones. Solar Cycle 24 was the weakest cycle in 100 years with sunspot number peaking at 116 for the solar cycle, well below average, which is 179. The 2019 panel, convened by NOAA, NASA, and the International Space Environment Services (ISES), predicted that Solar Cycle 25, following a relatively weak Solar Cycle 24, would also be weak, peaking in July 2025 at a maximum sunspot number of 115. Stronger solar cycles produce more solar storms with greater intensity and therefore pose a larger hazard for these critical technologies and services. Solar magnetic variability - here measured by sunspot number - regulates the frequency and severity of space weather events and hazards, which can interfere with the electrical grid, degrade GPS signals, increase orbital drag on satellites, and pose radiation hazards to airline crews and astronauts. No two solar cycles are the same, Miesch added. “We expect that our new experimental forecast will be much more accurate than the 2019 panel prediction and, unlike previous solar cycle predictions, it will be continuously updated on a monthly basis as new sunspot observations become available,” Miesch said. ![]() Mark Miesch, a CIRES scientist who serves as the solar cycle lead at SWPC, said the forecast for Cycle 25 had not been updated since its release in 2019 and is no longer reliable enough for SWPC’s customers, many of whom plan their operations years in advance. During this time, the product will be updated monthly to provide an accurate, up-to-date prediction for the progression of Solar Cycle 25, which began in 2019. The website offers SWPC partners and customers the opportunity to provide feedback on the product before it is fully integrated into SWPC operations. The prediction marks the debut of SWPC’s experimental Updated Solar Cycle Prediction Product on the Space Weather Prediction Testbed website. The updated prediction now calls for Solar Cycle 25 to peak between January and October of 2024, with a maximum sunspot number between 137 and 173. NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) issued a revised prediction for solar activity during Solar Cycle 25 that concludes solar activity will increase more quickly and peak at a higher level than that predicted by an expert panel in December 2019. ![]() This is fairly unique to Jira, so if you’re more familiar with other project management tools, it’ll take some time to get used to this segmentation. It means that, for example, a software development team can have one space to track their current sprint, and another for users to submit bugs to be addressed in a future sprint. Jira is designed to have multiple parts of your project split into different spaces to streamline individual workflows. Instead of focusing on the bigger picture, teams instead focus on specific features, issues, or other aspects of the project. That’s because you’ll typically be working in shorter blocks (or “sprints”) that last 1-4 weeks. When it comes to Agile project management, it makes sense to limit your project views to the bare necessities. Choose the Bug Tracker template, and you’ll only have the spreadsheet-style Issues view. On the Scrum template, you’ll get an additional view called Backlog, which is used for planning sprints and – you guessed it – managing your project’s backlog. For example, you’ll only get a timeline and board view on the Kanban template. ![]() Jira doesn’t offer a ton of project views, and the project views you get depend on the template you choose. Start a Project on Jira > Limited Project Views – But, Given Context, it Makes Sense Any new pages created in your Confluence space will automatically show up in this tab, too. This means you don’t have to repeatedly switch over to Confluence, which is a great way to streamline your workflow. Confluence greatly expands Jira’s functionality from a simple service or project management tool to a single source of truth.Īs long as you have a Confluence “space” (or wiki) connected to your project, you can even create new pages or edit existing ones within the “Project pages” tab of your Jira project. These include generic templates, from buyer personas and writing guidelines to Agile-specific templates like sprints and retrospectives. Jira Confluence hugely expands your options, with 75+ fully customizable page templates to help you build your project’s knowledge base. However, when you start using Jira, you’ll see that rather than being a completely separate software tool, Jira Software is just a piece of the wider Jira suite. I usually prefer to test and review project management tools on the merit of the core software alone. The saving grace here is Jira Confluence. Jira’s Kanban template is very basic, and you’ll only get two project views Both of these frameworks prescribe a fixed workflow so any variations on these templates are likely to be minor and required in only a handful of use cases. This isn’t surprising given that Jira focuses on the Scrum and Kanban frameworks of Agile project management. There are only 4 pre-built templates available for Jira, plus a handful of third-party options that you’ll have to install separately. ![]() Jira doesn’t have the most impressive range of project templates. Keep on reading to see whether it’s a good fit for your project. I’ve spent dozens of hours putting Jira Software (and various other Jira products) to the test. If you need to upgrade for the handful of features that aren’t available on the free plan, or you have a larger team, then you can try Jira for free for 7 days. Unlike other free plans on the market, core features aren’t locked behind the paid plan – you’ll get everything you need for up to 10 users. Small teams will absolutely love the free plans on offer. But if you’re not, be prepared for a steeper learning curve. ![]() If you’re already familiar with Agile, picking up Jira will be simple. Jira is flexible enough that any team following the Agile project management methodology can adapt it to their workflow. That’s not to say that teams outside of IT and software development can’t use Jira, though. Whether you’re a small indie developer or an IT helpdesk in a huge organization, Jira offers everything you need to streamline your workflow. Jira, for short, is a slimline project management tool that focuses on helping IT and development teams navigate not only the development process, but the life cycle of their product. If you’ve ever worked as (or near) a software developer, then you’ll have already heard of Jira Software.
